Strengthening Local & State Laws
An organization wanted to change both local ordinances and state law to increase fines and penalties for a specific type of crime. As a result of market conditions, this particular type of crime had become an epidemic throughout the community. The organization faced an influential and well-funded industry opposing the changes, as it would have significant impact on the industry's ability to purchase and resell goods.
Creating a coalition of business groups, community organizations, churches, law enforcement personnel and private companies all impacted by this crime was the first step in educating elected officials. We worked with the client and the coalition to draft amendments to existing local ordinances and state law, identify sponsors, and meet with key elected officials and state leaders to pass amended legislation.
The organization and the coalition that was assembled successfully influenced the City Council, County Commission and the Tennessee General Assembly not only to strengthen penalties against those committing the crime, but also to impose penalties on the industry if its members purchased stolen goods.
